You don’t need to have everything figured out before talking to an architect. Actually, you probably shouldn’t. But there are a few things worth thinking about before that first conversation. Not answers, necessarily. Just a starting point.
1. How do you actually spend your time?
Think beyond the number of bedrooms or square footage. Where does everyone end up at the end of the day? Do you cook a lot? Work from home? Spend every summer evening outside? Those routines tell us quite a bit.
2. What isn’t working now?
Sometimes it’s easier to start here. Maybe there’s never enough storage. Maybe the kitchen becomes a bottleneck every morning. Maybe there’s an entire room nobody uses. Knowing what you don’t want to repeat is useful.
3. What are your priorities?
There’s usually a reason beyond “we need more space.” Maybe you’ve owned a piece of land for years. Maybe your business has outgrown its current home. Maybe you’re finally building the house you’ve talked about forever.
4. How might life look different in five or ten years?
A building has to work on move-in day, but hopefully for a long time after that too. Kids grow up. Families change. Businesses evolve. A little foresight can go a long way.
5. What made you want to do this in the first place?
There’s usually a reason beyond “we need more space.” Maybe you’ve owned a piece of land for years. Maybe your business has outgrown its current home. Maybe you’re finally building the house you’ve talked about forever.
You don’t need a binder full of inspiration or a perfectly organized wish list to get started. Bring what you know, bring what you don’t know and we can figure out the rest together.
