Dogwood

Introduction

Contemporary living rooted in nature

Project Notes
  • 7,200 SF
  • Walk out basement with court
  • Shifted gable volumes
  • Interior/exterior veranda spine between private and public space

The hardscape reaches out from the hillside, establishing a strong connection to nature with an elevated pool positioned at tree canopy level. Set away from the home, the pool becomes a distant, reflective focal point—accessed via a gradual transition from the main level to the pool terrace. Meanwhile, the courtyard steps down a half-story toward the walkout lower level, where it forms the heart of the home: a protected, sunlit space for family gathering.

As you arrive at the property, you're greeted by a modest, grounded presence. Two gabled volumes frame a quiet, understated entry, offering a sense of welcome without grandeur. The landscape gently rises around the approach, allowing the home to feel nestled into the site—integrated rather than imposed. This design gesture deepens the connection between architecture and terrain, reinforcing a sense of belonging within the wooded landscape from which it emerged.

Two forms slide past one another, anchored by a central veranda spine that distinctly separates private and communal spaces. At the rear, the veranda extends into a covered patio, drawing the surrounding trees into the living experience and enclosing the courtyard within the architecture. This creates a secluded sanctuary, reflecting the client’s strong emphasis on security. Carefully composed window placement establishes a visual barrier, offering both privacy and a curated connection to the landscape.

Clad in a restrained palette of wood, glass, and stone, the residence echoes the quiet elegance of the native dogwood tree. Calm, clarity, and contextual sensitivity define this modern retreat—one that lives lightly on the land while deeply rooted in it.
